Ischia Porto

Ischia is the principal town of the Island of Ischia, and is located on the north-eastern coast of the island. The town is divided into two distinct settlementsIschia Ponte and Ischia Porto.

Ischia Porto, named for its port, is the arrival and departure point for most of the island's ferry services. The island's circular port was once a volcanic crater which filled up with water to become a lake. It was opened up to the sea in 1853, and now accommodates large ferries (who squeeze carefully through the narrow opening), hydrofoilsyachts and fishing boats.

The town is lively with visitors passing through, or remaining to enjoy a drink or meal at one of the many restaurants and bars alongside the harbour. At night the area is one of Ischia's busiest, with various piano bars offering evening entertainment.

The town makes a very good base for the tourist who wants to see the area. Various independently-organised boat-trips depart from the harbour, taking visitors around the island, to beaches and sights, or to the beautiful nearby island of Procida. From the bus station in Ischia Porto it's easy to take buses to other towns.

For holidaymakers who don't wish to travel further afield, there are some popular beaches along the shore in either direction, including the Spiaggia dei Pescatori, towards Ischia Ponte. Inland, a green and leafy spa park lies on the slopes between the two towns. A military thermal spa was constructed in 1876 to cater for soldiers, on the site of a casino belonging to the Bourbon royalty of Naples.

Castiglione Thermal park Ischia

Oasis of peace and tranquility nestled in a lush and luxuriant nature that slowly goes to kiss the blue of the sea: the Castiglione Thermal Park in Casamicciola has made these two colors that characterize it, a motto and a source of pride (The bluest green you've ever seen!), making it a unique piece in the mosaic of colorful beauty of Ischia.

Castiglione Thermal park Ischia
The story of this extraordinary thermal park where you can “enjoy” all the wealth, has very far origins.

It is located in the north of the island, in the town of Ischia Terme, in Ischia Porto border in a lush natural valley sloping towards the sea.

The flower beds and pine trees that surround the spa park, create an ideal atmosphere of tranquility. In Castiglione Thermal Park is made available to 10 including 8 spa pools with a gradation of water, continuously filtered by modern machines, ranging from 30 ° - 40 ° C, the Olympic swimming pool (mt x 25 mt. 14 ) fed by sea water and access to the beach with a jetty equipped from 15 June to 30 September.

Castiglione Thermal park Ischia
Therefore, not only a beautiful hydrothermal complex, but a true sensory experience from the small funicular that connects the entrance with spas and pools, passing through the picturesque trees and pine trees that give off a scent of resin and contrasting a wild Mediterranean vegetation dominated by chestnut trees and oaks, until it was lost into the sea, while a flock of birds gladdens us with its singing.

Negombo thermal park

Come on in. The water is fantastic.

Quite soothing and relaxing, in fact.

With the thermal pool — featuring hydro-massaging jets — kept at a constant temperature of 93.2 degrees Fahrenheit, I can understand why.

Sometimes, it’s little life events such as taking a day to pamper yourself that can do wonders to rejuvenate the soul, and thermal spas in Italy — particularly the region around Naples — abound. A recent trip to the popular Negombo resort on the volcanic island of Ischia proved worthy of its 28-euro entry fee (ticket bought from a tourist center at Ischia Porto for a 2-euro discount.)

Negombo thermal park
Negombo, set on the shores of the Bay of San Montano on the northwestern side of the island and splashed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, is considered one of the richest therapeutic basins in the region and a generous source of thermal water, according to an information packet doled out to visitors.

The park offers a number of “pools,” each designed to achieve a particular benefit. The thermal pools provide relaxation and are said to work toward the prevention of rheumatism, while the hydro-massaging jets stimulate circulation. The heat from the hamam, or Turkish sauna/bath, helps the body expel toxins and the private beach provides access to the sea for swimming and exposure to iodine, which benefits the thyroid gland.

Negombo thermal park
Negombo is more than a spa with thermal pools, however. It boasts lavish gardens designed by landscape artist Ermanno Casasco, who incorporated more than 500 varieties of Mediterranean and exotic plants throughout the park.

But quite honestly, while pretty, people don’t really go to Negombo for the gardens. They go for the thermal water spouts, the tufa sauna cave, or the “Kneipp” pool, which features two pools of water, one hot and one cold. Wading into one and then the other, with their contrast of temperatures, stimulates circulation and tones the body.

There’s the Olympic-size sea water pool, kept at ambient temperature, or the Jacuzzi with hydro-massaging jets and kept at a soothing, constant 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. (It seats eight and tends to remain full.)

And for the maximum indulgence, be sure to hit up the hamam, complete with a hot center stone on which patrons sit or lie to induce profuse sweating that causes the body to eliminate toxins.

Negombo thermal park
Bring a robe, flip-flops and bathing suit — this isn’t a no-clothes spa.

The healing properties and overall benefits of thermal waters have been used since the time of the Etruscans, some 800 years B.C.

DIRECTIONS: From Ischia Porto or Casamicciola, take public bus 1, 2 or CS for Baia San Montano. Get off at the San Lorenzo stop and follow the signs to the park.

TIMES: 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily

COSTS: It costs 30 euros per person at the resort, but tickets bought at Busfahrkarten ticket booth at Ischia Porto main square can save you 2 euros a ticket. Bus tickets cost 1.90 euros for 90 minutes.

The Magician's Grotto

In the southeastern coast of the island of Ischia, appears the Magician’s Grotto.

The Magician's Grotto
The fishermen, in the past, found there refuge from the rain. The name “Magician’s Grotto” derives from the legend of some fishermen that swore they saw an old giant, with flowing hair and beard, sitting on a rock of the cave and mysterious voices of girls.

The Magician's Grotto
Generally, after the rain, catching fish can easier, but fishermen attributed to the help of that mysterious benign spirit.

Today has become a destination for visiting, for those who perform around the island from the sea.
